A sad part of our history

The Protea Village land claim relates to a sad part of our history. People of Protea Village were removed from the land they occupied as tenants during the late 50s and early 60s.

FRA met with the claimant community on a number of occasions in order to establish common ground, but little information was forthcoming or shared. Discussions have always been engaging and civil. FRA at one stage was even invited by the Protea Village Action Committee (PROVAC) to table proposals as to how the claimant community could utilise the land. A section 42D agreement was signed by the Minister and the land officially handed over to the claimants.

On 17 June 2011, judgement was handed down in the case involving Bishopscourt resident William Booth, and two others (applicants), and the respondents The Minister of Land Affairs and Agriculture, The Regional Land Claims Commissioner, the City of Cape Town, the Protea Village Action Campaign (PROVAC) and two others. A factually incorrect report regarding this judgement was published in the local Tatler community newspaper on 7 July 2011. This led to the FRA requesting the newspaper to publish a retraction of this article, which was indeed subsequently done. Click here to read the correspondence between FRA and the Tatler.
